Introduction

The Spanish Inquisition, from 1480-1530, is known for the terror it caused the inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula. Although the Inquisition originally began to purify the nation from heretics, it came to have more materialistic, racial, and political motives, instead of just purification. The beginning of the Inquisition is generally credited to the reign of Ferdinand V and Isabella.

The objective of this mission is to use the available internet resources to explore and discover the causes and effects of the Spanish Inquisition.  We will examine the motives and logic behind the actions of every party involved in the Inquisition during the first 50 years.   You have a mission...can you escape the Inquisition???  Go ahead and familiarize yourself with a brief introduction of the Inquisition and some related vocabulary terms.

Task

Inquisiton Flag

You are sleeping soundly in your bed when you awake to a violent pounding on your door.  In the doorway stands the editor of The Inquisitor Magazine.  "Breaking news" he says. "There are rumors of violent atrocities against the heretics breaking out in Spain.  We can only speculate why or what is going to happen in the near future.  We desperately need the help of you and your assistants...!!"

With the help of your faithful colleagues, your task is to investigate these rumors and find out what is really going on.  There are three tasks, one for each of you:

  1. Photographer- The Inquisitor Magazine needs visuals!  They are looking for three excellent depictions of:

    • People

    • Trials

    • Autos de fé
    • Prisons
    • Torturings

    • Etc.

  2. Journalist- The editor wants you to find out what's happening and let them know.  Some questions you should include in your article are:

    • What is going on?
    • Why is this happening?
    • How did this begin?
    • Where have these events taken place? Will other areas be affected?

    • When did this begin?

    • Who is involved and who is responsible?
    • What can you speculate will happen in the near future?

  3. Interviewer- This story calls for first hand knowledge and opinions.  The magazine wants comments from every perspective.  You are to locate and interview three different sources concerning the events that are unfolding.  Some possible interviewees are:

    • Tomás de Torquemada
    • Isaac Abarbanel
    • King Ferdinand & Queen Isabella
    • Pope Sixtus IV
    • Antonio Jose da Silva
    • Lucrecia de León
    • Alonso de Espina

Process

  1. First you will be assigned to a team of 3 students.
  2. Each member of the group needs to review and choose one of the three tasks listed above.

  3. Research the provided resources listed under your task below.
  4. Use the information you have found in your research to complete your assigned task.
Photographer Guidelines

  • After carefully researching the provided sites, choose 3 scenes to depict.  In each of your depictions you should include at least (but you are not limited to) 2 magazine clippings and 2 newspaper clippings.  Along with your newspaper and magazine clippings you should use crayons, markers, or colored pencils.  Feel free to be creative and use fabric, stickers, wall-paper, etc.  The paper you use should be at least 81/2x11 inches or bigger.  Pictures should be historically accurate, meaning that you need to know the full history before you begin your assignment.  Accompanying each depiction should be one descriptive paragraph, explaining your picture.  Feel free to draw inspiration from any pictures related to the Spanish Inquisition that you find on the internet.  You will be required to present your pictures in a five minute presentation in front of the class.  Remember your assignment must comply with all copyright laws (MLA style bibliography).
Journalist Guidelines

  • After carefully researching the information in the provided sites, you are to write an article highlighting the main events of what occurred during the Spanish Inquisition.  You are to write this as though you were there when it was taking place (i.e. present tense). Refer to the suggested questions located in the task section; however, you are not limited to only these questions.  The article should be no less than three typed pages (double-spaced, 12pt font, 1 inch margins).  You will be required to present your article in a five minute presentation in front of the class.  Remember your assignment must comply with all copyright laws (MLA style bibliography).
Interviewer Guidelines

  • After carefully researching the information in the provided sites, choose which three people you would like to interview, remembering that you need to interview three different perspectives from the events that took place (example: one coverso, one inquisitor, one member of the Cortes of Aragon).  Each interview should be at least one typed page in interview format (double-spaced, 12pt font, 1 inch margins) and should look similar to the following:
Allen Gilbert:
King Ferdinand:
Allen Gilbert:
King Ferdinand:

  • You will be required to present your article in a five minute presentation in front of the class. Remember to include "The five Ws" (who, what, when, where, why, how).  Remember your assignment must comply with all copyright laws (MLA style bibliography).
